Steamship San Mateo at Long Wharf - 1893

On May 13, 1893 the Los Angeles Times reported: "The big steamer San Mateo is alongside the mammoth wharf at Port Los Angeles with a 5000 ton cargo. Sunday trains on the Southern Pacific will run through to the wharf. Hourly trains between the wharf and Santa Monica. Go and see the big ship. Round trip 50 cents." Per the Nov. 2, 1913 L.A. Times report on the the million dollar pier's demolition, the San Mateo was the "first vessel to discharge her cargo" (coal). Photo from Santa Monica Public Library
