Pacific Electric Railway Cars 1216 & 1371 at the end of the Sawtelle Line - May 9, 1948195 viewsPhotographer Alan Weeks wrote in 2007: I remember it was kind of funny as we came north on Sepulveda we stopped at Wilshire Boulevard. There was a gate across the tracks. The Motorman was reluctant to open the gate and go across Wilshire Boulevard. With sixty people urging him on he opened the gate with his railroad switch key and we slowly moved forward. The grass on the tracks was about a foot high. When the steel wheels hit the grass they started spinning and we did not move. At that point we threw dirt on the rails and gave the car enough traction to slowly move ahead. Then we all went out into Wilshire Boulevard to stop automobile traffic so the train could cross Wilshire and go into the Old Soldiers Home. Believe it or not, there was little traffic on Wilshire on a Sunday morning.

Santa Monica Cycle Path - June 189615 viewsView of Washington Boulevard at 3rd Avenue, looking west. A bicycle can be seen on this dirt road resting against a type of wooden frame that has a small sign attached on the left. It reads, "Cycle Path." On the right of that is a wider road, and it appears that a buggy is traveling away from view. Two unidentifiable structures can be seen in the background. Photo dated: 1896.
